Brazilian company adds recycled pulp to the local tissue industry
Celulose Reciclada invested Real 1.5 million ($920,000) to install a recycled pulp mill in Pernambuco state, northeast Brazil, to meet tissue producer demand.
The plant started operation in January 2008 and has a capacity 1,000
tonnes/month of pulp. The company currently has only one
working shift of eight hours, which means that it can triple its production if it is needed.
At this moment, Celulosa Reciclada is producing 350 tonnes/month of recycled pulp. According to Ailton Alves, business director of Celulose Reciclada, recycled pulp has been made for five years in the country, but there hasn't been production on an industrial scale up to now. "The recycled pulp manufacturer found an investor [Celulose Reciclada] to commercialize the project. We submitted a pulp sample to the Technology Institute of São Paulo and, after analyzing it they approved its quality, it stated that, depending on the application, it is even better than wood pulp," Alves explained. Celulose Reciclada's pulp mill is part of
an industrial complex in Paulista City, in Pernambuco state, occupying an area of 2,200 m2. The plant consumes "non recovered papers," according to Alves. "We buy special and selected recovered paper, such as liners containing paraffin, resin, silicon and adhesives," he said.
